Life Stories

Mother

Born: May 5, 1920
Died: May 27, 2013 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
Interred: Holy Sepulchre, Burlington

My mom, Kay, was the wife of Thomas Leonard and mother to Lynne, Mary Catherine, Helen, Eleanor, Lorraine and John. She enjoyed spending time with her 10 grandchildren, as well as her 10 great-grandchildren.

Eldest daughter of John James Gaffney and Marguerite Bertha Bazinet, she was baptized at St. Patrick’s Church in Hamilton, Ontario. She attended St. Mary’s Elementary School and St. Jerome’s High School (now Cathedral High School). First communion, confirmation and marriage took place at St. Mary’s Church in Hamilton.

Mom’s siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins and in-laws were very important to her and she never lost contact with them. She was proud of her native heritage and was a member of the Metis Nation of Ontario.

Kay was an active member of St. Peter’s and Paul C.W.L. for many years and her group made layettes and ran the candy counter at the church bazaars.

She was a block captain for the Canadian Cancer Society for many years and volunteered for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. My mother helped with fund raising for the House of Providence in Dundas (now St. Joseph’s Villa), and worked for the United Way and Niagara Paint Company.

Mom read all sections of the newspaper each day and if she could not finish the paper it was saved for the next day; in fact, the paper was not discarded until it was read. She had a great love for history, art and music and enjoyed travelling across Canada by train, plane and boat. She also travelled to the Yukon, Alaska, California and other U.S. destinations, kissed the Blarney Stone in Ireland and travelled in England.
