Life Stories

My mom

Hi Mom I miss you!

When I saw the opportunity to post a story, I couldn’t resist.

One of my earliest memories is when I was five years old. I insisted that we walk half a mile from our home in East Hamilton so I could show you “the most beautiful garden in the world”. A neighbour’s lawn was packed with dandelions and you smiled at me with delight. Thank you for sharing my happiness.

One day at our cottage on Lake Erie, you held my face in your two warm hands and kissed my forehead. I remember loving you so hard.

Remember when I would walk home for lunch on cold winter days from St John’s Elementary School? You’d be waiting with steaming soup and toast. I loved coming home to have lunch with you.

I remember too that you would fix your hair and apply lipstick when you were going out with Dad. You were so pretty. You still are beautiful mom-in every way.

Remember all the meals you prepared and the homemade pies? No one will ever forget your delicious apple pie, so rich with cinnamon and sugar! Several times each year I make your homemade raspberry jam as a tribute to you. Thanks mom for teaching me about sweet joys in life.

Remember how you stayed up late to chat with me after I worked the 3-11 pm shift at the hospital? You asked about my patients and the nursing care that I provided. You were my friend.

I remember too when you came to visit me in California in 1980. I was living independently for the first time, and had very little cash. We sat for hours wrapping miniature boxes tied with ribbon to decorate the Christmas tree.

Mom you gave me so much! You taught me to say please and thank you. You taught me to savor the beauty of nature and to love freely-especially when it’s difficult to love. You gifted me the pleasures of cooking, eating, and family. You taught me to be responsible and take care of others. And finally, you gave me your counsel, empathy, and your time. I love you mom and I miss you every day! Michelle
